About the album
Calling the thriving melting pot of Miami home, indie-rock buzz band Ex Norwegian formed in 2008 and performed at CMJ only months after their first gig and the release of their first single "Something Unreal." Their debut full-length “Standby,” releasing March 17, 2009 on Dying Van Gogh Records, includes twelve tracks that highlight Ex Norwegian’s love of classic power-pop mixed with British-invasion sensibility, creating an irresistibly catchy and unique style.
Ex Norwegian’s curious name came from a Monty Python episode. Chief singer/songwriter and guitarist, Roger Houdaille, is joined by high school friend Carolina Souto on bass, Arturo Garcia on drums, and Venezuelan Billie G on guitar.
While many are quick to point out influences such as the Kinks, Lou Reed and Talking Heads, the group does a fine job at coming across as a bit of fresh air. Much of the lyrics on Standby possess a subtle, edgy cynicism, with irresistible grooves and melodies that are plentiful too, as is the use of the all-powerful, scarily omnivorous mellotron. EX NORWEGIAN’S choice of band name usually demands some explanation -- its curious origin is from a Monty Python episode; as does their album title -- Standby started off as an inside joke but soon found a deeper meaning in today’s political climate. A handful of songs on the disc are political in nature, despite Houdaille’s allegations: “I tried to avoid writing blatantly political songs, but ultimately there are few on the album, including “My Name Is Paul” which is dedicated to former World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz.”
In anticipation of their debut album, two singles were released in 2008, the Shins-styled folk-pop “Something Unreal” and the 7" vinyl release “Dance Trance Pants,” which falls neatly somewhere in between The Killers and 70s glam epitomized by bands like T. Rex. The success of these singles was accompanied by an east coast tour plus an appearance on the European TV network Sky News are only the beginning of the story. Catch the band on the road in 2009.
song notes
FUJEIRA IN MY DREAMS
" This song was written in 2004-5, quite randomly I must admit. It was it was part of my first group, Father Bloopy, and we cut a demo of it which would serve as a template for Ex Norwegian when I decided to record it as our album opener. " - Roger
" Turning the beat around near the end of the song makes me feel powerful " -Arturo
" Still don't know how to spell the title... I stole some nice licks from that guy Professor Alzheimer, and added some extra ones in the middle part that wasn't there before, and also at the end. " - Billie G
"I had no idea it was written so long ago! " - Nina
DON'T BOTHER
"This song mentions 3 bands; Sigur Ros, Melt Banana and Meshuggah. Also features Nina on the 'doo-wee-ooh' bass lick" - Arturo
SOMETHING UNREAL
" This is the true beginning of Ex Norwegian. This song was the first recorded, with Derek Cintron on drums and the first song that we finished and got mixed. It was recorded at a weird speed which almost forced us to re-record it but we got lucky! " -Roger
" After I learned the song, it was stuck in my head non-stop, morning noon and night for about two weeks. I guess you can say it's a bit catchy. " - Nina
FRESH PIT
" Almost didn't make the album...but I know we all love this song so it wouldn't make sense to not put it on. I also feel it balances out the pop sensation of the record. " - Roger
" Cowbell is out of fashion, now everybody wants more guiro! " - Arturo
POW3RFULL
" Our wannabe punk anthem! " - Roger
"I like this song, especially the part that goes deeemidilimidlildidmiedeeeedshshshshshdooaoieoidoieoiadiooeisoiidweeeee " - Billie G
"The title speaks for itself. " - Nina
SUDEKI LOVER
" Another song from 2005 era, this one was written by Eric Hernandez of the heavy rockers Kylesa and hardcore band Capsule. Our version is only slightly different... " - Roger
NOTE: the original can be heard on the alternate standby digital album.
" I don't even play video games, but this one goes out to all the gamers out there! I give it to you, the inspiration payed off...thanks Eric :) " - Nina
ADD VICE
" Written with a 'hit' song in mind. I won't say which one! LOL Or what the hell its about - I don't know! " -Roger
" Reminds me of miami in the 80's for some reason...either the vice part of the killer back up vocals in the chorus! " - Nina
GROSS YOU
" Another song that came out organically in one shot. " -Roger
" Roger still hasn't told me the secret or my future............still waiting..."- Nina
DANCE TRANCE PANTS
" One of my hobbies includes poking fun at Tiesto. " -Roger
" Stevie Wonder is one of my favorite drummers. That's all I'm gonna say about this one. " -Arturo
" I told Roger a long time ago we should have a dance song and at first he didnt seem to into it, but I guess some ants crawled in his pants while he was listening to Tiesto and he must of started dancing, hence the part where he got mad at Tiesto and wrote a song with a momentary Tiesto bashing - all in good fun. Maybe it didn't really happen like that, but it's a funny thought. Have you seen roger dance? You can in the video DTP yesssss..." - Nina
ALL OVER AGAIN
" I tried to make another 'Something Unreal' and out came this...a call to wake up from the false 'change' propaganda that is all around. It includes my favorite and least favorite moments of the record! " -Roger
"This song was an aquired taste for me. It started out over a really fast groove with maracas, but slowly evolved and was rearranged into a progressive pop track. Now it's among my favorites." -Arturo
" I like the melody in the middle: simple, gets the message across, kinda in the pocket...that's the way I like things most of the time. When I want drama and complications, I just drive to a faraway location with my unreliable 1991 Mitsubishi Galant. " -Billie G
SAD WONDER
" The second song recorded for the album. We spent more time on it and I think the results really created something unique." -Roger
"Perfect for any 50's theme party. " - Nina
MY NAME IS PAUL
" A song to humanize the political elite class. Paul Wolfowitz and co. are a delusional bunch...and this song is a light hearted attempt at seeing the world thru their eyes. " - Roger
"This one and Sad Wonder could be released as singles on the same cd. I remember it was recorded the same day i jammed with Roger and Nina for the first time... good times!!" - Arturo
" One of my favorite songs. " - Nina

STANDBY WAS RECORDED BY A GROUP IN FORMATION.
WHEN THE SESSION FOR THE FIRST SONG "SOMETHING UNREAL" HAPPENED, IT WAS ROGER AND NINA...OPERATING STILL AS FATHER BLOOPY...BUT KNOWING THE NEW SONG WOULD REQUIRE A NEW NAME...AND A NEW BAND.
PRODUCER FERNANDO PERDOMO AND THE BANDS CLOSE FRIEND DEREK CINTRON HELPED OUT FOR THE INITAL SESSIONS BEFORE ARTURO GARCIA APPEARED ONE DAY AT A SESSION TO AUDITION.
A FEW MORE SESSIONS DOWN THE ROAD SAW BOTH SOME ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES WITH SINGER MICHELLE GRAND & GUITARIST BILLIE G.
ROGER HOUDAILLE
Guitars, Vocals, Mellotron, Synths and production
Discovering The Kinks was a life changing moment for Roger, who by middle school was already performing his own material on stage. However, it wasn't until years later that he finally decided to step up into arguably the front-man position (after years of being the sideman in several bands) with Ex Norwegian. Forming a label in 2000 called Dippy Records, Roger has enjoyed working with a vast array of artists from across the globe. His hobbies include stamp collecting, bit torrents and exposing the New World Order. He was born and rasied in Miami Beach, FL (and Guatemala City, Guatemala).
CAROLINA SOUTO
Bass guitar
Carolina played bass for the first time with Father Bloopy, Roger's band at the time. Before that, she was an accomplished classical guitarist, perfoming in 2001 as a musical ambassador in Japan. Although known to be the Brazilian of the group, she was actually born in California. When she is not rocking out with Ex Norwegian, you may find her surfing in Costa Rica or completing her degree in English literature. However, her passion for music runs deep, surrounded by music at an early age thanks to her dad, a classical Brazilian jazz Chorinho player. It was not just música brasileira that her parents were blasting...Bob Marley and Eric Clapton were heard on a daily basis.
ARTURO GARCIA Drums, Percussion, Vocal
Arturo always liked music since the beginning. When he was 4 he learned how to ride a 2-wheel bicycle, and discovered the sounds of the beatles' "Hey Bulldog" on his dad's cassette player. At 10 years-old he mastered the art of desk hand-drumming and found out that Michael Jordan was God. He moved from his native Venezuela to Miami in 2004 to study music at a fancy school. Nowadays he likes to improvise on his instrument and other aspects of life and he barbecues pretty much anything that walks or swims.
BILLIE G
some guitars
Billie G (Guillermo Gonzalez) was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. He started playing guitar at a very young age, thanks to his older brother gettting him into heavy metal and rock 'n' roll. As a guitarist, he has worked with several bands and artists back in his home country, covering a wide variety of styles. Recently, Billie moved to somewhere in South Florida, where he still plays music to whomever wants to hear it. In his free time, he sleeps. If he's awake, he reads, goes out to random places, plays flamenco guitar, writes, and tries to kiss his elbows. He also likes dogs. Hey, if you're a girl and you're reading this, feel free to contact him, unless you're a fat stalker with lots of facial hair. If not, then I guess it's 0k. I mean, HE thinks it's 0k.
MICHELLE GRAND
Vocals
Recruited from the same Rock Ensemble were Roger cut his teeth, Michelle Grand has rocked across the United States winning the crowds with her charismatic performances. With Ex Norwegian she contributed harmony vocals (and lead on "Fresh Pit") but due to other commitments no longer an active member of the band. She likes the beach, music, writing, photography and the occasional gummy bear. Michelle is Nicaraguan-American.
